Otto Group Integrates Europe’s First Stretch Robot into Its Logistics Processes

The Otto Group has become the first company in Europe to deploy the unloading robot “Stretch” from Boston Dynamics. The innovative robot is designed to increase operational efficiency and address the demographic changes in the warehouse sector in light of the labor shortage. The integration of Stretch marks another significant step in the strategic partnership between the Otto Group and Boston Dynamics.

Stretch was specifically developed for the requirements of warehouse logistics and offers a state-of-the-art solution for unloading containers or swap bodies. The robot is equipped with an advanced camera and sensor system that enables it to navigate autonomously, recognize packages, grasp them safely, and move them precisely. Additionally, Stretch controls an electrically extendable conveyor belt, on which the goods are efficiently placed and transported.

Stretch provides valuable support not only with heavy packages and extreme temperatures but also relieves employees from physically demanding work. “The introduction of Stretch is a crucial step in increasing operational efficiency and managing the rising volatility in the business model,” says Kay Schiebur, Board Member Services at the Otto Group. “The combination of human expertise and technological innovations is an important building block to meet the growing market demands and further enhance the service for our customers.”

“For us, the European launch of Stretch is a significant step. As one of the most innovative and forward-thinking companies in Europe, the Otto Group is the perfect partner to implement and further develop our technology,” says Marc Theermann, Chief Strategy Officer from Boston Dynamics.

As part of the partnership, joint research and development projects are also planned to identify and implement further applications, such as palletizing or loading containers, in the future.

In addition to Stretch, the four-legged mobile robot Spot from Boston Dynamics is already successfully in use at the Otto Group. Spot assists with tunnel inspections and preventive maintenance activities for operational facilities, including thermal monitoring, reading analog measuring devices, and acoustic detection of noise anomalies as well as air and gas leaks.

“Investments in technology are not a short-term trend but part of a long-term strategy to create scalable processes that go far beyond individual use cases,” says Schiebur. “The Otto Group is actively shaping the future of logistics. With the introduction of AI robotics, the openings of the innovative shuttle warehouse in Altenkunstadt, and the new European flagship in fulfillment, the logistics center in Ilowa, we maintain a high pace and invest a mid-three-digit million amount in enhancing the customer experience.”
