The future cannot be shaped alone. The Otto Group therefore focuses on worldwide partnerships and alliances and corporate venturing – the strategic collaboration with startups and venture capitalists – is a key pillar in this. Deep integration into the startup ecosystem and over 300 participations and cooperations provide the retail company with early access to the latest technologies and a constant transfer of know-how.
The Otto Group has been a strong partner in the startup ecosystem for around 20 years, investing in the venture capital firms Project A, a leading operational fund for European startups, the purpose and impact-oriented VCs Revent and Norrsken, and early-stage investor Headline.
Since 2008, the Otto Group has been an anchor investor in Headline (formerly e-ventures). Headline invests globally in early-stage startups – in Asia, Europe, North America, and Brazil. This international focus gives the VC deep insights into current market developments. Through the long-standing collaboration, Headline is at the same time very familiar with the Otto Group's business models and requirements:
Corporate venturing is not only financially interesting: Collaboration with VCs helps the Otto Group gain fresh external impulses – essential given the current speed of technological development. Katy Roewer, Group Executive Board member for Finance, Controlling, and HR at the Otto Group, is convinced of the added value for the Otto Group: "The investment in Headline is also very important because it gives us early access to new technologies, innovations, and talented entrepreneurs. This allows us to connect with startups and observe new developments from San Francisco that will later come to Europe."

In June, both worlds converged at Headline's annual Board Meeting in San Francisco, California: Otto Group Executive Board members and experts had the opportunity to meet ten new startups from Headline's network that are developing innovative solutions for various challenges in retail – from AI-based ERP systems to IT automations and AI-driven supply chain solutions. The fact that AI-based solutions are often the focus for these startups is no coincidence, given the technological developments in retail, as Christian Leybold, long-time companion and Managing Partner at Headline, emphasizes:
Even though both startups and corporations benefit from collaboration, some challenges need to be overcome. Bringing together innovative solutions from startups with the complex requirements of a corporation requires expertise and targeted management to be truly successful.
OTTO DOCK 6 creates this connection between the needs of the Otto Group and the diverse startup portfolio of Headline and other VCs. As an internal Venture Client Unit, it is the central link between Otto Group companies and startups – ensuring that external innovations are integrated where they can create the greatest added value within the Group. The OTTO DOCK 6 team analyzes specific problems and strategic focus areas within the Otto Group. Based on this, experts identify suitable startups to test new technologies and if successfull, jointly develop and implement scalable solutions - in the 2025/26 financial year, 84 problem statements were analyzed, and 18 pilot projects were implemented, ranging from process automation and improving the customer experience along the customer journey to projects in logistics and sustainability.
A key to success: every potential collaboration must address a concrete problem with strategic relevance and the solutions must deliver added value for the organisation. Only then the impact of the partnership is maximized.
A concrete success story initiated by OTTO DOCK 6 demonstrates how well this corporate venturing approach works in practice: The collaboration with the Vienna-based startup Rankscale is an example of the rapid integration of innovative solutions. Given the growing use of generative AI chatbots for product search, OTTO DOCK 6 supported the implementation of Rankscale's AI platform at OTTO. This platform analyzes brand visibility in GenAI tools and helps optimize product placement. The successful test phase at OTTO underscores the solution's potential, which is already being considered for other Group companies.
The cooperation with Rankscale is exemplary of the Otto Group's extensive corporate venturing commitment and strong focus on new technologies like AI along the value chain. The company has a clear goal: it not only wants to react to current developments but also actively shape the future of retail and strengthen Europe as a business location. Strong partnerships, a clear AI-first mindset, dedicated employees, medium-term investments of 350 million Euros in tech and AI, and a broad corporate venturing strategy are the foundation for this.
