In order for newly hired staff to quickly feel at home, we welcome them with a dedicated integration programme. They learn everything there is to know about the company, its goals, culture and employees. A side benefit is also the chance to start building a network across many different departments and functions.
Together with the Leuphana University we train future executives of the Otto Group by giving them the opportunity to complete a master of business administrations (MBA). The focus of the degree is on qualifying the participants for General Management. Since the scholarship programme has an international scope, classes are taught in English. The part-time, two-year programme combines your studies with your continuing work at the Otto Group.
Management development programmes are tailor-made for all high potentials with top performance and outstanding know-how from all the group companies. Participants are trained, among others, on how to devise strategy and innovation concepts, and how to use management methods based on best practice and state of the art. The training modules are organised as workshops, allowing participants to discover and develop new ideas and future opportunities, and to initiate necessary changes.
As a line-manager you join in the leadership programme, which helps you realize your individual management potential, even up to the top levels. The multi-levelled development programmes are posted on a group-wide basis, thus allowing for career paths to extend beyond the corporate head office.
The development programme for qualified junior professionals is the first step on the Leadership Programme. It focuses on acquiring management know-how as well as practical job and networking skills.
The promotion programme is a group-wide development programme for junior employees taking on their first management responsibilities. Its focus is on teaching management basics and strengthening a management culture that will promote innovation.
Best practice is more than a management fad, and this is why we pool the know-how of our experts and decision-makers across corporate and country boundaries. You can communicate with your colleagues and share what you know with other experts in operative clubs, develop new ideas with country heads in regionally focused country workshops, or discuss new solutions to old problems in strategically oriented conferences. Internal systems also allow you to generously share your knowledge, i.e. through our ottogroupnet virtual team rooms – our own corporate social media network.
Highly qualified employees are the key to success at most companies, and this is even more true at OTTO. The OTTO-Academy contributes significantly to supporting this strategic corporate goal. Moreover, the OTTO-Academy tailor-makes events for particular departments and maintains a pool of coaches and moderators to ensure that the demand for advanced training is fully met. The OTTO-Academy also adds value as an online learning institution. With a simple click, managers and employees can enhance their knowledge by working on small, continuously updated learning modules on selected topics.

The Otto Group supports employees in seeking a master's degree while working, and not only financially. Every year we offer four scholarships to selected employees. The two-year, part-time degree programme is primarily aimed at graduates of the cooperative degree programme of the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) and the Elmshorn Nordakademie, as well as other ambitious employees with a bachelor degree.
An internship with us is your first choice as a first career step. You have the opportunity to create networks, take on responsibility for a project and convince us of your poise, know-how and drive.
A team of committed interns deals with the ins and out of intern life, announcing regular cultural and sports events and a “tip of the week” in the weekly newsletter. In addition, every Thursday they organise an intern night, and once a month a presentation on a current topic. The circle is a great opportunity to practice networking while doing your internship and to take early responsibility for your own projects.
University students that have shown exceptional initiative and talent during their internship, convincing us of their skills, have a chance to join the promotion program talents@otto. We will support you until you graduate, facilitating personal contacts to our HR personnel, inviting you to a variety of events and assisting you with a potential career start with the Otto Group.
Under the roof of the OTTO-Academy we offer you many extensive advanced training programmes: self-development, computer training, comprehensive information on health and development-related issues. Our training programme provides you with all the skills and know-how you need to be ready for the future.
Our trainees are committed above and beyond their actual job descriptions. For example when they get involved in the junior company “cooperation5”, which has been planning, organising and staging events since 2008. In addition, just before they have completed their training, they inform interested successors on the possibilities Otto has to offer – at in-house events, in schools and at trade fairs. Last but not least: The trainee blog. Five trainees write about their experiences and adventures with Otto – thus learning new skills on the side.
Particularly outstanding and dedicated trainees get the chance to do part of their programme abroad. However, these spots are very sought-after, and you have take your own initiative to get in.
We don't leave you alone after you've completed your vocational training. Instead we help you find a permanent job – preferably, of course, with the Otto Group Head Office or one of the group companies.
